Philadelphia - The Drexel women's lacrosse team erased an 8-4 deficit to earn a 10-9 win over George Washington in a non-conference game played at Vidas Field. Jessica Bill (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) scored three goals while Katie Bradley (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) contributed two scores and an assist. Sophomore Mariana Uribe (Villanova, Pa./Notre Dame) tallied the game winner with 6:05 remaining. The win moved Drexel to 4-1 on the season while George Washington dropped to 0-3.
George Washington built an 8-4 lead with three straight goals to open the second half. Just 24 seconds into the period, Laura Wunk scored unassisted before Lindsay Melvin tallied her only goal of the game. With 23:12 remaining in the game Mia Breheny scored to give the Colonials their biggest lead of the game. The Dragons started the rally just seconds later as Gwenna Johnson (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) won the draw control and immediately sprinted toward the net where she found Bill who scored her first goal of the game. Just 23 seconds later, Bill used a one-on-one move to elude a George Washington defender and scored to cut the GW lead to 8-6. From there the Drexel defense stiffened as senior captain Maura Cullen (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) notched two of her three caused turnovers with a pair of interceptions to thwart Colonials' scoring opportunities. With 15:09 remaining, Nicole Iacono (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) converted a free position shot to bring the Dragons to within one goal before Bill scored her third goal of the game to knot the score. After nearly 14 minutes shutout defense from the Dragons, Katelyn Honeyford took a Kristin Karcsh pass to give GW a 9-8 lead with just 9:18 remaining. Fifth-year senior Nicole Adams (Jackson, N.J./Jackson) converted a penalty shot to tie the game up and Uribe corralled the ensuing draw control and eventually worked her toward the cage. The sophomore picked an opportune time to tally her second goal of the season as the goal stood up for the remaining six minutes of the game.
The Colonials took a 5-4 lead into halftime after scoring the game's first two goals before a Drexel 3-0 run gave the Dragons a brief lead. George Washington answered with three straight goals of its own before Bradley ended the half with an unassisted score with 6:27 remaining.
The Dragons outshot the Colonials, 33-17, and held a 12-9 edge in draw controls. Caitlin Garman made 14 saves in goal for the visiting squad while Lauren LaBella (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) stopped three shots. Rachael Behrndt (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) spelled LaBella for nearly 20 minutes and made two saves while allowing just two goals.
The Dragons return to action Wednesday, March 5 when Drexel will travel to La Salle for a non-conference game. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
