Philadelphia - Drexel women's lacrosse lost a heartbreaker at Vidas Field as Saint Joseph's scored the final three goals of regulation to send the game into overtime where the Hawks produced the only tally to defeat the Dragons, 9-8. The win moved the Hawks to 5-4 on the season while Drexel fell to 7-2. Both of Drexel's losses have been by a single goal.
Katlin Keegan opened the game's scoring as she gave Drexel an early 1-0 lead before two straight goals from the visitors. Becca Drylie-Perkins and Gwenna Johnson each scored to give Drexel its lead back but the Hawks knotted the score at 3-3 on an Abby Renninger goal. Looking to respond, Drexel Head Coach Anna Marie Vesco went to her bench and inserted Katie Lawson. The sophomore earned the draw control following the Hawks' equalizer and raced downfield to score just 13 seconds after her entry into the game. Less than seven minutes later, Lawson added a free-position goal to give the Dragons a two-goal edge. With less than two minutes in the period, Jessica Westlake brought Saint Joseph's to within a goal with her first score of the game.
The Hawks tied the game coming out of halftime with a Courtney McManama goal before a three-goal run from the Dragons gave Drexel an 8-5 lead with just 14 minutes remaining in the game. Keegan and Katie Bradley each scored and assisted the other on a goal during the run while Johnson also tallied for Drexel. The Hawks used three different players to tie the game at 8-8 as McManama, Westlake and Christina Colangelo each scored her second goal of the game. In overtime, the Hawks' leading scorer, Jenna Martino beat Drexel goalie Lauren LaBella for the period's only score. A last second effort by Drexel's Mariana Uribe was turned away by Hawks' goalie Suzy Herlihy. The save was the 16th of the game for Herlihy while LaBella contributed 11 stops.
The Dragons open up Colonial Athletic Association action on Sunday, March 30 as Hofstra visits Vidas Field at 1:00 p.m.
