Hempstead, N.Y. - For the second time on the weekend, Hofstra's ace Kayleigh Lotti shutout Drexel (21-16, 7-8) 8-0. This time the run-rule victory came in the fifth inning in Sunday's series finale. Three Dragons reached base against Lotti, who threw a perfect game in the opener on Saturday. The Pride (31-10, 12-3) scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the run-rule and close out the win.
Drexel's best scoring opportunity of the game came in the second inning when Ashley Botelho led off with a single. Molly Dacey sacrificed her to second base and Sandi Wambold followed with a walk, giving the Dragons a pair of runners with one out. But Lotti found her groove to fan Carla Waldron and Kristen Beaver and and end the inning.
Lisa Williams reached second in the third inning after drawing a walk and advancing on a ground out by Christina Rodriguez, but again the Dragons failed to bring her home as Katrina Gaudier popped out to shortstop and Amanda Hastings struckout swinging.
The Pride got on the board with three runs in the third inning. Hofstra put together five hits in the inning and also took advantage of a throwing error by third baseman Kelly Downes in the frame. Breanna Gomez relieved starter Katrina Gaudier in the third inning and got the final out. But Gomez herself was touched up for five runs over the next two innings. Ellen Boundy gave up the final runs of the game on an RBI double that gave Hofstra the requisite eight runs.
The Dragons will look to get back on track against University City rival Penn on Wednesday. The doubleheader at Penn starts at 3:00 p.m.
