
Drexel Rally Comes Up Short in 10-9 Loss to James Madison

Harrisonburg, Va. - The Drexel women's lacrosse team scored the game's final four goals to close Colonial Athletic Association opponent James Madison's lead to 10-9 but could not record the equalizer as the Dragons fell in their final game of the season. The loss dropped Drexel's record to 10-7 (2-5 CAA) for the season. Five of Drexel's seven losses were by one goal, including three conference defeats. Seniors Katie Bradley and Gwenna Johnson led the Dragons with three goals against the preseason conference favorite.
The first half went back and forth as Jessica Bill scored the first goal but James Madison's Kim Griffin answered. Johnson gave Drexel's its last lead of the game on a goal that was assisted by Bill. The Dukes scored two straight goals both on free position shots before Bradley knotted the score at 3-3 with a free-position goal of her own. Annie Wagner broke the tie with her first of four goals but Kaitlin Keegan answered for the Dragons. Wagner scored with just 31 seconds remaining in the half to give James Madison a 5-4 heading into halftime.
Just over 90 seconds into the second half, Kim Griffin gave the Dukes their first two-goal lead of the game but Johnson would cut the lead in half with an unassisted goal. James Madison responded with a four-goal run that seemed to put the game away but the Dragons starting chipping away at the lead. Freshman Sam Berger started the rally with a goal on a free-position shot with 18:14 remaining in the game. Johnson followed with her third goal of the game before Bradley scored twice, the final tally coming with 6:54 to go. Bradley's goal would be the final score of the game as the Dukes held on for the 10-9 win.
Drexel outshot James Madison, 30-23, for the game but the Dukes held a 12-9 edge in draw controls. In addition to her three goals, Bradley recorded a game-high four caused turnovers. Lauren LaBella allowed four goals and made two saves and was charged with the loss in goal. Whitney Johnson made five saves while allowing three goals. Rachael Behrndt also appeared in the goal for Drexel allowing one goal and making four saves.
