Villanova, Pa.--The Drexel men's lacrosse team raced out to a big lead and held on to defeat Villanova, 10-7, giving the Dragons a share of the CAA regular-season championship and the top seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament. It is the second straight year the Dragons (12-3, 5-1 CAA) have shared the CAA regular-season title. The 16th-ranked Dragons, who tied a school record with their 12th win of the season, will meet the Wildcats once again on Wednesday night at Vidas Field in the CAA Semifinals.
Drexel scored the first four goals of the game and Villanova (5-9, 3-3 CAA) was never able to cut the lead to less than three goals after that. Adam Dennis got the Dragons on the board in the game's early going. It would be the first of four goals for the sophomore from Fairfax, Va. Andrew Chapman and long poles Steve Grossi and Dan Fessel each had goals to put the Dragons up 4-0. Villanova got its first goal of the game with 5:55 to play in the half as Tim Driscoll had the first of his four goals.
The lead increased to 8-1 as the Dragons scored the first four goals of the second half. Dennis had two of the goals, both off assists from Colin Ambler. Ambler ended the run with a goal of his own. Villanova started its comeback with a pair of goals from Driscoll that sandwiched a Mike Brennan tally to make it 8-4 after three periods. Drexel answered with scores from Dennis and Chapman in the first six minutes of the quarter. The Wildcats scored the final three goals of the contest to make the final 10-7.
Ambler finished with four points for Drexel. Chapman, who scored a pair of goals, now has 38 goals on the season and 80 in his two years at Drexel. The Dragons dominated the "x", winning 15 of 20 face offs. Individually, Ryan West was 6-for-8 for the Dragons, who outshot Villanova, 30-24.
Andrew Diloreto had 12 saves for the 'Cats, who also had three assists from Paul Webber. Bruce Bickford, the CAA's leader in goals against average and save percentage, came up with 10 saves for the Dragons.
Drexel and Villanova will play at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night in West Philadelphia. The winner will face either second-seeded Hofstra or third-seed Delaware in the CAA championship game. The CAA champion gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
