Dragons Sweep St. Peter's on the Road

Jersey City, N.J. - Drexel spoiled St. Peter's home opener with a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday, dropping the Peahens to 0-18 on the season. The Dragons exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning of a 10-5 victory in game one and scored in each of the first four innings to pull away for an 8-2 win in the nightcap. The Dragons improved to 18-9 on the season and the team is 5-1 in the CAA heading into this weekend's doubleheader against regional rival Delaware. Reigning CAA Player of the Week Ashley Botelho went a combined 5-for-8 on the day with four RBIs between the two games.
Game One
Sophomore Katrina Gaudier earned her 10th victory of the season in the opener against St. Peter's she threw four solid innings and was backed by a 10-run offensive output by her team. Molly Dacey went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Sandi Wambold drove in three runs and Gaudier helped her own cause by knocking in two runs as well.
Drexel broke the game open with an eight-run fourth inning aided by two Peahen errors in the field. The Dragons scored all eight runs with two outs in the inning. The rally reached its creschendo with three straight doubled off the bats of Dacey, Wambold and Carla Waldron which all drove in runs.
Breanna Gomez and Ellen Boundy worked the final three innings in relief of Gaudier, who was rested after the Dragons mounted their 10-1 lead in the fourth inning. Gaudier allowed two earned runs on four hits through four innings and struck out two. After giving up singles to the first two batters she faced, Boundy, who relieved Gomez after two innings, settled in to retire the final three batters of the game and close out the victory.
Game Two
In the nightcap, Drexel pounded out 15 hits and pulled away for an 8-2 win to keep the Peahens without a victory on the season. Botelho went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs at the plate to lead the Dragons' charge. Six Dragons had multiple hits in the game, including Christinia Rodriguez, Amanda Hastings, Lisa Williams, Botelho, Sandi Wambold and Kelly Downes.
Ellen Boundy got the start and worked effectively through four innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out five batters. Amanda Shattuck relieved her and did not allow a hit in three innings to end the game.
Drexel put runs on the board in each of the first four innings, capped by a three-run third inning. Botelho, Wambold and Downes all drove in runs in the inning on RBI singles. Shattuck relieved Boundy in the fourth and held the Peahens scoreless. She fanned the final batter of the game looking to give the Dragons their 18th victory of the season.
Drexel is back in action this weekend when they travel to Newark, Del. for their first conference road games of the season, against the rival Blue Hens.
