Philadelphia – Drexel (1-0) opened its 2008 campaign with a convincing 4-0 win over Iona (0-1). Prior to the match the team honored the memory of fallen Dragon Laura Meikle Koch, a 2001 graduate and one of the team's all-time greats, who passed away this summer after a battle with cancer. The Dragons will honor Meikle's number nine each season in her memory. The current owner of the number nine jersey, Daria Bialik, did her best to honor the number in Drexel's season opener by scoring two of the team's four goals in the shutout victory.
Keeper Kaitlin Bond posted her 15th career shutout, solidifying her hold on Drexel's all-time record. Freshman Jenna Lindsay recorded a goal and an assist in her first collegiate game. Drexel outshot the Gaels 6-1 in the first half and 10-3 on the game.
Lindsay, who started in her first career game with the team, put Drexel on top in the ninth minute when she scored an unassisted goal at the 8:35 mark. Lindsay later earned an assist on Bialik's first goal in the 36th minute that put the Dragons on top 2-0. Lindsay took a feed from fellow frosh Jordan Halasz and blasted a low shot on the right side. Iona keeper Suzanne Baldissard made the save, but deflected the ball to the far side of the goal where Bialik settled it and deposited her first tally of the season.
Bialik put the Dragons on top 3-0 when she converted on a corner kick served up by Kim Chiarelli. Caley Burke headed Chiarelli's kick and Bialik settled it off one bounce and knocked home her second tally of the evening at the 58:42 mark. Burke scored one of her own in the 68th minute when a hustling Jessica Lawall tracked down a ball deep in the goal box and crossed it to a wide open Burke for the Dragons' fourth goal of the match.
Drexel's defense allowed Bond to make just one save in earning her first shutout of the season. Suzanne Baldissard allowed all four Drexel goals and made three saves in net for Iona.
The Dragons are back in action on Friday, Aug. 29 when they host Rider in a 7:00 p.m. match at Vidas Field.
