Durham, N.C. - The Drexel field hockey team held a 1-0 halftime lead at No. 6 Duke but the Blue Devils fought back in the second half to defeat the Dragons, 4-1. The loss dropped the Dragons' record to 4-2 on the season. Sophomore Susan Ciufo scored Drexel's only goal.
Eleven minutes into the game, Drexel earned a penalty corner. The Dragons sent the corner to Kim Tunell who sent the ball to her left where Jennifer Bolger sent a shot toward the cage. Cuifo deflected the ball into the cage to give the Dragons an early lead. The goal was Ciufo's sixth of the season. She has recorded at least one point in all six of Drexel's games this season. For the rest of the half, the Blue Devils threatened to tie the game but goalie Colleen McAndrew made five saves in the period including a pair on a penalty corner as the Dragons went to halftime with the 1-0 lead.
Just 19 seconds into the second half, Duke broke through when Marian Dickinson fired a one-timer past McAndrew in the middle of the arc. Five minutes later Ashley Pultorak deflected a pass into the cage to give the Blue Devils a lead they would not relinquish. With 10 minutes left, Duke scored to seal the win. A goal just before time expired made the final, 4-1, Duke.
McAndrew made 10 saves for Drexel while Samantha Nelson made one stop for Duke.
The Dragons return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17 when Drexel's hosts Saint Joseph's at 4:00 p.m. at Buckley Field.
