Easton, Pa. - Drexel used two first-half goals to down Lafayette, 2-1, in the Dragons' first win at Lafayette in 10 tries. Jordan Freese and Susan Ciufo recorded goals for the Dragons who improved to 6-2 on the season. Lafayette dropped to 4-3 in 2008.
The Dragons got on the board first when a broken penalty corner resulted in Megan Keller sending a ball toward the goal where Freese finished the ball to put Drexel on the board. Drexel doubled its lead as Amanda Kicera dribbled the ball into the middle of the arc and fired a reverse shot that was redirected into the cage by Ciufo. The goal was Ciufo's eighth of the season. The sophomore is averaging one goal per game and has scored at least one goal in each of the Dragons' last six games.
The Drexel midfield of Kicera, Tunell, Keller and Gibernau controlled the ball through much of the second half but the Leopards put increasing pressure on the Drexel defense. Lafayette finally broke through with a goal on a penalty corner. The hosts were threatening to tie the game but the play of senior Colleen McAndrew held the Leopards' offense off the board for the rest of the day.
Drexel returns to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 24 for its final game before conference action begins as the Dragons travel to Temple for a 3:30 p.m. tilt.
