Philadelphia - The Drexel field hockey team rebounded from its first loss of the season to topple Saint Francis, 7-0, in a non-conference game at Buckley Field. Jen Cairone scored three goals while Susan Ciufo notched a pair of scores to lead the Dragons. The win bumped Drexel's record to 3-1 on the season while the Red Flash dipped to 0-3.
Drexel scored on all four of its first-half penalty corners. Seven minutes into the game, Kim Tunell (Wilmington, Del./Concord) fired a shot after Carolina Gibernau (Montevideo, Uruguay/Universidad de la Republica) settled the corner. Tunell's shot found the waiting stick of Jen Cairone (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) at the right post while the ball found the back of the cage. The goal was nearly identical to Cairone's first goal of the season at California. Less than a minute later on the Dragons' second penalty corner, Susan Ciufo (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) took a shot off of a rebound that was illegally touched by a Saint Francis player and the Dragons were awarded a penalty stroke. Ciufo stepped up to take the stroke and calmly deposited the ball into the left side of the cage. Less than three minutes later, Ciufo struck again. Tunell wound up to fire another shot on a penalty corner but instead slid the ball to her left where Jennifer Bolger (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) sent a shot toward the cage that was deflected into the goal by Ciufo. With less than seven minutes remaining in the half, Cairone notched her second goal of the game as she scored on a rebound in front of the goal.
The second half featured more of the same as Jordan Freese (Allentown, N.J./Allentown) scored on a deflection after Ciufo initially deflected a shot toward the cage. Less than two minutes later, Cairone completed her hat trick as she scored on a rebound. With less than 20 minutes remaining, freshman Monica Baick (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) recorded her first career goal in a scramble in front of the cage.
Colleen McAndrew made two saves in recording the victory. Heather Abbott replaced McAndrew and saw her first collegiate action in the cage. Erin Reifsteck made 17 saves for the Red Flash. For the game, Drexel outshot Saint Francis, 35-3, and earned 15 penalty corners to the visitor's two.
Drexel returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 10 as the Dragons travel to Villanova for a 7:00 p.m. game.
