Philadelphia, Pa. – VCU opened the second half with a 21-3 run to pull away from Drexel en route to a 75-46 victory at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons were led by Samme Givens' 11 points while Gerald Colds chipped in with 10 points. The Rams had three players score in double figures with Joey Rodriguez totaling a game-high 16 points. The loss dropped Drexel to 5-8 (1-3 CAA) while VCU improved to 10-5 (3-1 CAA).
The game was tight throughout the first half though the Rams led most of the way. With less than a minute remaining, Colds connected on a three pointer while Givens followed with a lay-up to cut the Rams' lead to four with just 26 seconds remaining. On the final possession of the half, VCU found Bradford Burgess open from the left wing. The freshman connected from behind the arc just before the buzzer to give the Rams a 35-28 lead heading into the break.
Drexel held Eric Maynor, the nation's sixth leading scorer, to just eight points on the night but the Rams found other options on offense. Rodriguez was 4-for-5 on his three-point attempts as VCU was 9-for-12 from deep on the day. The Dragons struggled on offense, especially in the second half, as their 46 points was the lowest output of the season. Drexel did pull down 22 offensive rebounds, including five from Givens, the conference leader in the category.
The Dragons return to the road on Saturday when they visit Georgia State. It will be the team's seventh road game in their last eight appearances. The game begins at 4 p.m. and can be heard live on WFIL, 560 AM.
