Box Score
Philadelphia – Drexel scored a pair of first half goals and Nicole Sinclair tied a career-high with nine saves as the Dragons upset James Madison, 2-0, in a match at Vidas Field on Sunday.
Drexel (3-9-1, 1-4-1) jumped out to an early lead with a goal in the tenth minute. Juliana Speroni picked off an errant clearing pass and started a two on one. The freshman fed a pass across the top of the box to fellow rookie Alex Vazquez, who fired a shot off her left foot into the far corner from about 12 yards out.
James Madison (7-6-1, 3-2-1) outshot Drexel in the first half, 6-3, but found themselves down by a pair of goals at intermission. With just under four minutes to play, Caitlin Gottier dribbled in on the left side and fed the ball towards the net. Vazquez picked up the pass and distributed a square ball to Elizabeth Matta, who was trailing the play. Matta converted for her second goal of the year. The Dukes looked like they would cut the lead in half with less than a minute to play, but Nicole Sinclair thwarted Corkey Julien's shot from in close. It was one of five first-half saves by Sinclair.
The Dukes kept the pressure on Drexel for most of the second half and had numerous opportunities to get on the board. Katie Menzie hit the cross bar with 31 minutes to play and Jess Remmes' header also hit the cross bar, this time with 11 minutes to play. In between those opportunities, Sinclair was outstanding and turned aside four JMU opportunities in the second half. Her biggest save came when Amalya Clayton came in on the right side from point-blank range. Sinclair dove to make a save and the Dragons cleared the rebound.
JMU held a 16-6 advantage overall in shots. Diane Wszalek, JMU's keeper, was forced to make just two saves, both in the early stages of the second half. Drexel had four corner kicks, while the Dukes had three.
The Dragons are off until Friday, when they travel to Virginia to face George Mason. Drexel will then face Towson on the road before returning home to face UNCW on Friday, Oct. 23.
