Philadelphia - Drexel field hockey enters one of its most crucial weekends of action as the 11th-ranked Dragons host Virginia Commonwealth on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7:00 p.m. and 15th-ranked James Madison on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1:00 p.m. Drexel is currently 8-1 (1-0 CAA) on the season while VCU has been one of the conference's biggest surprises of the season as the Rams currently sport a 7-2 (1-1 CAA) mark after being picked to finish last in the CAA by the league's coaches. James Madison, the defending CAA regular season and tournament champion, enters this weekend's action at 6-4 (1-1 CAA). The Dukes handed Drexel its only conference loss last season as the Dragons look for revenge in one of the most anticipated match-ups of the conference season.
VCU has been led offensively by freshman Kelsey Scherrer and junior Marle van Dessel. Scherrer, a top CAA Rookie of the Year candidate, leads the Rams with 18 points and is tied with van Dessel for the team lead in goals with eight. Rachel Krumm has played well on both sides of the ball with three goals, three assists and four defensive saves so far this season. The Rams' marquee win came at nationally ranked Iowa when VCU posted a 3-2 victory.
James Madison is once again led by two time CAA Player of the Year Kelsey Cutchins. The Dukes' cage-minder sports an .810 save percentage despite posting just one shutout this season. Tori Lindsey has been James Madison's strongest offensive force recording eight goals, including a pair of game-winners. The Dukes picked up early wins over ranked opponents Ohio State and Kent State.
Drexel enters this weekend after its biggest conference offensive display since joining the CAA. The Dragons rattled the cage seven times at Hofstra en route to the 7-3 victory. Susan Ciufo and Christina Mastropaolo are among the nation's leaders in goals with 12 and 11, respectively, this season. Two-time First Team All-CAA midfielder Carolina Gibernau has four goals and five assists after recording a goal and a pair of assists against Hofstra.
Drexel Field Hockey continues its support for breast cancer research as Sunday's match-up with James Madison will be a “Play 4 the Cure” game. The event marks the second season that Drexel Field Hockey has participated in the cause. Drexel will be wearing pink shoelaces and wristbands in observance of breast cancer research. All pink apparel sold at the game will benefit “Play 4 the Cure” and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. “We are excited to do our part in the fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and funds,” said head coach Denise Zelenak. “Breast cancer has touched so many in the field hockey community and we are happy to hold this event in honor of our friends and families.” All spectators are encouraged to wear pink to show their support.
