Box Score
Philadelphia - No. 11 Drexel dropped its first game at Buckley Field in 16 contests as No. 15 James Madison pulled off a 3-2 upset in front of a standing-room only crowd. The Dukes led the entire way as three different players recorded goals for the visitors. Christina Mastropaolo and Jordan Freese notched Drexel's scores. The loss dropped Drexel's record to 9-2 (2-1 CAA) while James Madison moved to 8-4 (3-1 CAA).
James Madison opened the scoring just over three minutes into the contest as Auburn Weisensale converted a loose ball in front of the cage. Just before halftime, Meghan Bain took a few dribbles in the left side of the circel before unleashing a shot that went into the right side of the cage. Despite holding a 7-1 edge on penalty corners, the Dragons headed to the break down two goals.
The Dragons finally got on the board when Carolina Gibernau attempted to lift a shot on a penalty corner and a Dukes' defender deflected the ball high into the air. Mastropaolo waited for the ball to come down before taking a baseball-like swing at the ball in midair and sending the ball into the right netting. While Drexel searched for the equalizer, James Madison generated an opportunity in front and was awarded a penalty stroke after an infraction by a Drexel defender. Tori Lindsey converted the stroke high in the left side of the cage as Drexel goalie Jenna Phillips dove to her right and narrowly missed the ball. Drexel pulled back in the game with less than 12 minutes remaining when Freese rifled a shot directly off a Sofia Sanguinetti stick-stop that went to the right of goalie Kelsey Cutchins, who had sprawled out in front of the goal. Drexel had just one good offensive opportunity in the final 12 minutes but were unable to generate a shot on a penalty corner.
James Madison held an 11-9 edge on shot though earned just one penalty corner to the Dragons' 11. Cutchins, the two-time CAA Player of the Year, made four saves while Phillips stopped five shots.
Drexel returns to action on Friday, Oct. 9 when the Dragons hit the road to face preseason CAA favorite and nationally ranked Old Dominion at 5:00 p.m.
