Marginean Approaches All-Time Scoring Record As Dragons Tip it up With University City Rival Penn Today

Philadelphia - Drexel women's basketball will renew its rivalry with 33rd Street neighbor Penn for the 12th time in a 1:00 p.m. tilt at the Daskalakis Athletic Center this afternoon. The Dragons (0-1) are looking to bounce back from a 71-61 opening-night loss to Penn State while the Quakers are playing their first game of the 2009-10 season today. Senior forward Gabriela Marginean is within striking distance of Drexel's all-time scoring record of 1,900 points held by Michelle Maslowski ('02). Marginean, who scored 27 to lead all scorers against Penn State, needs just 20 to become Drexel's all-time leading scorer in women's basketball.
The Dragons got off to a slow start in the first half of their season debut on Friday. Turning the ball over nine times in the first half and surrendering 11 offensive rebounds resulted in a 20-point Penn State lead late in the opening period. Led by Marginean, the Dragons would mount a rally, however, scoring 10 unanswered points to close the half and trim the Lady Lions' lead to 10 points at the break. Drexel would eventually save Penn State's advantage to just four points early in the second half, but the Lions would surge back, and a pair of missed three-pointers late in the contest would quash the Dragons' final hopes of a come-from-behind victory. Jasmina Rosseel added 14 points and knock down two three-pointers to leave herself just five treys away from second place on Drexel's all-time list. In addition to her team-leading 27 points and eight rebounds, Marginean also pulled away a career-high six steals in the game.
Todays matchup is the first Div. I game for Penn's first-year head coach Mike McLaughlin, who arrived in University City this year after a successful run at nearby Holy Family University. The Quakers return two starters from last year's squad that went 9-19 under Pat Knapp. Transfer senior Sarah Bucar guides the team from the point guard position and forward Caitlin Slover is the team's returning leader in blocked shots, rebounds and steals.
Drexel is 9-2 all-time against the Quakers and won 62-52 last season, which was the Dragons' first win against Penn at the Palestra since 1992. Drexel's last win against Penn at the DAC came on Dec. 20, 2007 when the Dragons pulled away for 60-41 victory.
Fans attending today's contest can park in the Drexel Parking Garage on 34th and Ludlow Streets for a $5 charge. Admission is $5 and free for children under 12 years old.
