Dramatic Comeback Sends Dragons Past Virginia Tech, 10-9

Philadelphia – Drexel women's lacrosse opened its season with a 10-9 victory over Virginia Tech as the Dragons erased a three-goal deficit with less than eight minutes remaining. Katie Lawson (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) scored the game-winning goal with just 1:24 remaining to give Drexel the win over the Atlantic Coast Conference school. Lawson totaled three goals on the day while Mariana Uribe (Villanova, Pa./Notre Dame) and Kimberly Kabernagel (Levittown, Pa./Conwell Egan) each added a pair of scores. The game was the first of the season for both teams.
Virginia Tech got off to a quick start as the Hokies reeled off the game's first four goals after just 12 minutes of action. The Dragons rallied as freshman Charlotte Wood (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) recorded her first career goal to get Drexel on the board. Kabernagel and Uribe each scored to bring Drexel to within a goal at 4-3. With 5:52 remaining in the half, Becca Drylie-Perkins (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) knotted the game at 4-4. The Hokies responded with the final two goals of the half to regain the lead then extended the margin to three goals with a Liz Carpenter score two minutes into the second half.
With the Dragons in another hole, Allegra Gerhardt (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) pulled Drexel a goal closer but Rachel Culp answered for the Hokies to make the score 8-5. Lawson recorded her first goal of the day with 16:53 remaining in the game but again the Hokies had an answer. Allie Emala tallied her third of the day to give the Hokies a three-goal edge with 12:19 remaining. With time winding down, Lawson scored on a free-position shot with just over seven minutes remaining. The teams went back and forth without a goal for over four minutes until Uribe came slashing toward the cage from the left and fired a shot that brought Drexel to within a goal with 2:52 remaining. Eighty seconds later, Kabernagel muscled her way in front of the cage and fired a shot in traffic that found the net. As she shot, Kabernagel was fouled and Virginia Tech's Jessica Nonn was issued a yellow card. Instead of an ensuing draw, the call gave the ball to the Dragons after the goal. Lawson was given the ball at the midfield stripe as officials whistled play to resume. Lawson headed straight for the cage and used a pair of dodges to find enough room to rifle a shot high into the net to give the Dragons their first lead of the game just eight seconds after Kabernagel's game-tying goal. Virginia Tech won the next draw but Amanda Gregg (Ft. Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) made a key defensive play to cause a turnover as the Dragons picked up possession. The Hokies got one last chance but Culp could not handle a pass in front of the cage with just four seconds remaining as the Dragons hung on for the victory.
Along with her two goals, Kabernagel caused a game-high four turnovers and tied for a team-high with three draw controls. Nicole Musto (Glastonbury, Conn./Marist) and Katie Blazer (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) each recorded three groundballs. Lauren LaBella (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) made five saves in goal to record the victory. Drexel outshot Virginia Tech, 23-17, on the day.
The Dragons will return to action on Feb. 18 as American visits Vidas Field for a 4:00 p.m. game.
