Three Dragons Record Hat Tricks in 10-6 Win Over American
2/18/2009 6:09:14 PM | Women's Lacrosse
Philadelphia – Becca Drylie-Perkins, Mariana Uribe and Charlotte Wood recorded three goals each as Drexel defeated American 10-6 in a non-conference game played on a cold and rainy Vidas Field. Redshirt Freshman Jaclyn Klunder chipped in with three assists, all on Drylie-Perkins goals, while goalie Lauren LaBella allowed just four goals and made eight saves in recording the victory. Drexel moved to 2-0 this season while American dipped to 0-2.
American opened the game's scoring with a goal on a free-position shot by Gena Ibello but Drexel rebounded with five straight goals over an 11-minute span to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Wood scored the first three Drexel goals in three different ways. The redshirt freshman scored the first on a free-position shot then notched her second with an unassisted score. Her third goal in a span of 4:36 came on a feed from Katie Lawson off of her free-position attempt. Uribe halted Wood's scoring run by notching a goal after twisting through the defense and firing a shot that skipped into the net. Just 21 seconds after Uribe's goal, Lawson recorded a score to give the Dragons a 5-1 lead with 13:39 remaining in the half. The game looked headed to halftime by that score when Leslie Fischer brought the Eagles one goal closer with a free-position goal with just 37 second left.
Drexel put the game out of reach early in the second half. Uribe waited just 36 seconds after halftime to add to Drexel's lead with her second goal of the game. Just 34 seconds later, Drylie-Perkins and Klunder put on a scoring show as the two connected on a pair of goals over the next 30 seconds as Klunder found Drylie-Perkins in front of the cage and whipped perfect passes to the junior who scored nearly identical goals. After Fischer's second goal of the day, the duo connected again on the same play with 21:57 remaining in the game. Uribe added her third goal of the game to give Drexel its largest lead at 10-3. The Eagles scored the final three goals of the game but it was not nearly enough.
Senior captain Josie Haller had a solid game on the defensive end picking up four groundballs and causing three turnovers, both team-high totals. She has not committed a turnover over the last 17 games she has played dating back to the 2007 season when the Dragons faced American. Katie Blazer added a team-high four draw controls and also added two groundballs.
The Dragons will return to action on Feb. 21 when Drexel will travel to Franklin Field to face No. 5 Penn. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
