Spencer's Near Triple-Double Leads Drexel Past Loyola, 74-58

Philadelphia – Leon Spencer tied the school record with nine blocked shots and narrowly missed a triple-double as Drexel defeated Loyola (Md.), 74-58. Scott Rodgers and Gerald Colds combined for 41 points as the Dragons shot 70 percent from the floor in the second half and improved to 15-11 on the season.
Drexel went on a 15-0 run early in the second half to break a 38-38 tie. Colds, who had four three-pointers in the second half, nailed a pair of threes to start the run. Rodgers scored the final three points in the run with a three-pointer to put Drexel up 74-58. The Dragons made 10 of their first 11 shots in the second half, including all four of their long-range attempts. They also did the job on the defensive end, holding the Greyhounds to just 27 percent shooting in the second half and 29 percent in the game. Spencer had six of his blocks in the second half on his way to tying the school record held by Bob Stephens, Robert Battle and Chaz Crawford. The junior also had nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
Loyola led at intermission, 31-30, as Drexel struggled from the field in the early going. The Dragons made just seven field goals in the first 20 minutes, but still trailed by just a point. Marquis Sullivan had 10 points in the half for the Greyhounds and knocked down a pair of three-pointers.
Rodgers finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists. The senior had four three-pointers, which tied his career-high. Colds added 18 points and was 4-fro-7 from behind the arc. Drexel had a season-high 11 treys in the game and was 7-for-9 from deep in the second half.
Drexel returns to conference play on Wednesday night when Northeastern comes to the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Huskies are tied for second in the Colonial Athletic Association, just one game ahead of the Dragons. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
