Newark, Del. – Drexel's seven-game winning streak came to an end as Delaware defeated the Dragons, 73-70, in overtime. The Dragons (12-9, 8-4 CAA) rallied late in regulation to tie the game, but the Hens got the lead in overtime and held on to even the season series.
The Blue Hens (10-14, 4-8 CAA) appeared to have the game wrapped up when Jawan Carter made a pair of free throws to make it 64-58 with just over a minute to play. However, the Dragons' Tramayne Hawthorne nailed a three-pointer with 56 seconds to play, and, after gaining possession, Hawthorne hit another from long-range to tie it with 15 seconds to play. Carter had a chance to give Delaware the win, but his driving lay-up came up missed and the teams went to another period.
In the extra session, Delaware went ahead for good when Carter hit a three-pointer with just seconds left on the shot clock to make it 70-67. Drexel did have the final possession, but Jamie Harris missed on a three-pointer and Hawthorne's desperation three from the wing came up short.
Scott Rodgers scored nine of his team-high 17 points in the first half as the Dragons took a four-point lead to intermission. The Dragons scored the first nine points of the game and had an 11-point lead at one point before the Blue Hens started to chip away. Marc Egerson nailed a three-pointer as the shot clock expired to start a 15-8 run over the final 7:26 of the half to make it a 34-30 Drexel lead.
Freshman Samme Givens had his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Hawthorne also finished in double figures with 11 points. Evan Neisler added nine points and a game-high 12 boards. The Dragons outrebounded the Hens, 52-32, and had 23 offensive rebounds. Drexel was done in by 37 percent shooting and was just 11-for-19 (.579) from the line. Delaware made 22 of its 30 free throw attempts and was 7-for-14 from behind the arc.
Egerson led all players with 23 points. He also had 11 boards. Brian Johnson scored 20 points and had four assists.
The Dragons host Old Dominion at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
