Philadelphia - Drexel lost leading scorer Charlotte Wood and captain Josie Haller due to yellow cards but were able to outlast Saint Joseph's, 6-5, in non-conference women's lacrosse action. Five different Dragons scored goals while Lauren LaBella made eight saves, including six in the second half, to key the Drexel defense. The win moved Drexel to 6-1 on the season while Saint Joseph's fell to 3-4.
Drexel scored the first two goals of the game as Lawson got the Dragons on the board with 23:22 remaining before Mariana Uribe took a Jaclyn Klunder pass and scored just three minutes later. The Hawks battled back as Charlotte Wood was issued a yellow card and Saint Joseph's took advantage of the man-up situation. The hosts scored twice in the three minutes Wood was out to tie the game. Drexel rebounded as Wood returned as the Dragons posted three straight scores. Becca Drylie-Perkins scored on a Wood pass before Amanda Gregg scored with six minutes remaining. Katie Blazer capped the run with a goal as Klunder picked up her second assist of the game. Just before halftime, St. Joseph's got one goal back as Jenna Martino notched the team's third man-up goal of the game. The hosts outshot Drexel, 16-13, in the opening period but just five of the Hawks' 16 shots were on target.
Just three and a half minutes into the second period, St. Joseph's made it a one-goal game as Meghan McDevitt scored. The Drexel defense responded as the Hawks were kept off the board over the next 20 minutes of the game. With the game winding down, Katie Blazer gave the Dragons a key insurance goal with less than four minutes remaining. The Hawks made a late push with a goal from Julie Mineweaser with just over two minutes to go. They won the ensuing draw and got a great opportunity but a shot from Martino sailed wide. With the Hawks looking for another opportunity for the tying goal, Nicole Musto caused a turnover and scooped up the groundball. The Dragons cleared the ball and ran out the clock to seal the win.
Kimberly Kabernagel played well on both ends with three caused turnovers and added four groundballs. In addition to her team-high two goals, Blazer recorded two caused turnovers and three groundballs. Saint Joseph's outshot Drexel, 30-23, and did not get issued a yellow card while Drexel had its season-high total of seven.
Drexel returns home to Vidas Field on March 25 for a non-conference game against Bucknell at 4:00 p.m.
