Philadelphia – Drexel (11-9) dropped a non-conference game to Philadelphia rival Saint Joseph's 8-2 on Tuesday. Erika Rosenwinkel went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Hawks (13-11) and starter Erin Gallagher went four innings without allowing a hit before being relieved in the fourth with an 8-0 lead. Katy Harrington drove in the Dragons' only runs of the game.
Saint Joseph's put two on the board in the first inning by play small ball and being aggressive on the bases. Laura Cardone scored on the front end of a first-and-third double steal and Rosenwinkel drove in Monica Aguilar with a single to the left side to make it a 2-0 game.
Rosenwinkel was in the middle of the action again in the third inning when she belted a double to the wall in left center with runners on first and second to drive home another run for the Hawks. Bernadette Moran punched a single to left field to plate another and Sue Lebow popped a single into right field just behind first base to drive in the remaining runners and make it a 6-0 Saint Joseph's lead. The seeing-eye single bounced Allen from the game in favor of Amanda Shattuck. The reliever induced a towering pop up by Becka Shumock to end the inning.
The Hawks pushed their lead to eight in the fourth on an RBI double by Aguilar and a single by Brooke Darreff.
Drexel battled back in its half of the fifth. Paige Collings gave the Dragons their first hit of the day with a single to center and after Drexel loaded the bases on an error and a walk, Katy Harrington hit a rope to right center for a two-run double. Harrington's knock made it an 8-2 game and helped the Dragons stave off the eight-run rule.
The Dragons dodged disaster in the fifth inning getting out of jams with runners on second and third and no outs and bases loaded with two outs to keep the Hawks from adding to their lead. Shattuck escaped in the seventh by striking out the cleanup hitter with the bases loaded in to outs to get her team into the eighth with a chance to come back.
Allen incurred the loss after letting up six runs on six hits in two and two-thirds innings of work. Amanda Shattuck went four and a third innings in relief for the Dragons. She allowed one earned run and struckout four batters.
Drexel returns to action tomorrow with a road doubleheader at Bucknell at 3:30 p.m.
