Wilmington, N.C. – Rookie hurler Hillary Allen picked up her second complete-game victory of the weekend while pitching Drexel to a 2-1 win over UNC Wilmington (4-22, 2-4) to win the weekend series in North Carolina. Ashley Botelho and Devon Metcalf drove in Drexel's runs and Allen made her one-run lead stand up for the win. Drexel is now 14-11 overall and 3-3 in CAA play this season.
Allen scattered three hits and three walks over seven innings. She struckout two batters en route to her fifth win of the season, which evened her record at 5-5 on the year. Christina Rodriguez and Paige Collings both went 2-for-3 for the Dragons, who move into fourth place in the CAA standings with the win.
Botelho, who was responsible for driving in three of Drexel's four runs in Saturday's doubleheader, staked her team to a 1-0 lead in the first inning by knocking in Paige Collings from second base with an RBI single.
UNC Wilmington squared the game in the bottom of the third inning by using a walk by Kelsey Eddinger, a ground out and an RBI single off the bat of Katie Houmard to make it a 1-1 game.
Drexel pulled back ahead in the fifth inning with Allen scoring the go-ahead run. After the starting pitcher drew a lead-off walk, Kristen Beaver moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Lead-off hitter Devon Metcalf laced a double down the left field line to send Allen scampering home to give Drexel a 2-1 lead.
Allen allowed runners to reach base in five of the first six innings but managed to pitch her way around the trouble and cling to the Dragons' one run lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Allen slammed the door on the Seahawks by inducing a pair of ground outs before fanning Houmard to end the game.
Amanda Davenport took the loss for UNCW despite pitching well through the entire game. She allowed two runs on six hits and a walk in seven innings.
Drexel returns to Philadelphia to play a doubleheader against Lafayette on Wednesday, April 1 at 3:00 p.m. before hitting the road to play a three-game conference series at George Mason next weekend.
