Richmond, Va. - Drexel trailed by 25 points at halftime before falling to Towson 73-62 in the opening round of the CAA Tournament. The sixth-seeded Dragons scored 48 points in the second period but their comeback bid fell short.
Towson opened the game with a 15-0 run and led by as many as 26 points in the first half. The Tigers (11-21) shot 50 percent in the first half, while Drexel (15-14) struggled from the floor. The Dragons made just four of their 23 field-goal attempts in the first 20 minutes.
The Dragons tried to get back in the game and cut the lead to eight on two occasions in the second half. Evan Neisler scored on a lay-up with 5:19 to make it a 51-43 game. However, Robert Nwankwo and Junior Hairston scored on back-to-back trips and the Dragons couldn't get the lead under nine points the rest of the game. The Dragons continually fouled in the final three minutes, but Towson made just enough free throws to come away with the win and advance to face Northeastern.
Hairston led all players with 24 points. He was one of four Tigers to reach double figures in scoring. Tramayne Hawthorne, Scott Rodgers and Jamie Harris each had 11 points for Drexel. Leon Spencer had a career-high 11 rebounds before being called for a flagrant foul midway through the second half which led to an ejection.
