Philadelphia - The Drexel women's lacrosse team mustered just three goals as the Dragons fell to Delaware, 7-3, in a Colonial Athletic Association game played at Vidas Field. Goalie Lauren LaBella was outstanding in the cage for the Dragons as she stopped 11 shots and held the Blue Hens to just one goal in the first half. The loss dropped Drexel to 7-5 (0-3 CAA) on the season while Delaware stayed perfect in conference play at 3-0 and is now 7-5 overall.
Drexel appeared headed toward a big offensive game early as the Blue Hens were whistled for offsides while the Dragons were on offense. Danielle Iacono was given the ball in the middle of the area for the restart. She flipped the ball to Nicole Musto who scored easily as the Dragons were on the board just 1:04 into the game. The score remained 1-0 for 10 minutes until the Blue Hens were finally able to beat LaBella as Emily Schaknowski converted a free-position shot to tie the game. Both teams had chances over the final 20 minutes but were unable to convert as both goalies made impressive saves as the score remained 1-1 as the halftime horn sound.
Delaware quickly ended the scoring drought with a goal just 25 seconds into the half as Deb Sloan scored on a skipping shot that found the net. Just over eight minutes later, Delaware scored again as Courney Aburn took a Lindsey Coon pass and beat LaBella. The Dragons ended their scoreless streak when Becca Drylie-Perkins connected on a free-position shot from the left side to bring Drexel back to within one. The Dragons were unable to generate many more chances as Delaware put the game away over the next 14 minutes with three straight goals. Katie Lawson brought Drexel a bit closer with a great individual effort that saw the junior take the ball coast-to-coast for a goal with 2:19 to go but it was the Dragons' final goal of the game. The visitors capped the scoring with Stephanie Allen's second goal of the game with nine seconds remaining to make the final score, 7-3.
Delaware outshot Drexel, 27-13, and picked up 13 groundballs to the Dragons' six. Drexel won seven of the game's 11 draws. Delaware goalie Jessica Cerveny made seven saves to record the victory.
Drexel continues its conference schedule on Sunday, April 12 as the Dragons travels to Towson for their first CAA road game of the season. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
