Towson, Md. - Drexel junior Katie Lawson scored four goals but Towson's offense proved to be too much as the Tigers prevailed 17-12 in a Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse game. The Dragons trailed just 7-6 at halftime, but Towson reeled off 10 second-half goals to pull away. The loss was Drexel's fifth in a row as the Dragons dropped to 7-6, 0-4 CAA on the season. Towson got seven goals from Nikki Marcinik to help the Tigers improve to 8-5, 2-2 CAA.
The Dragons scored the first two goals of the game as Becca Drylie-Perkins opened the contest's scoring with an unassisted goal just 2:10 into the game. Lawson followed just 24 seconds later after receiving a pass from Kimberly Kabernagle. Towson responded 49 seconds later with the first of seven straight goals as the Tigers threatened to put the Dragons away in the first half. The Dragons rebounded as Lawson recorded her second and third goals of the game. Charlotte Wood brought the visitor's a goal closer as Drexel moved to within 7-5 as the first half wound down. With just 25 seconds remaining in the period, Amanda Gregg scored on a Drylie-Perkins pass as the Dragons headed to intermission down by just one goal.
Towson recouped its lead in the first 10 minutes of the second half as the Tigers scored six straight goals in the opening 9:24 of the period. Marcinik scored the final three goals of the run, all within two minutes as the home squad led, 13-6. The Dragons again battled back with three straight goals, including two from the eight-meter stripe. Wood notched her second in the run while Lawson scored her fourth of the game. Danielle Iacono capped the streak with a free-position score. With the Towson lead down to 13-9, Marcinik stepped up again as she scored twice more to give the TIgers a 15-9 lead with just 10 minutes remaining. Drexel scored three of the final five goals but it was not enough.
For the game, Towson outshot Drexel, 32-24, but the Dragons picked up 19 of the game's 31 draws. Goalies for both teams struggled to keep the offenses from scoring as Towson's Casey Lean allowed five goals while making two saves before being pulled late in the first half for Mary Teeters. The substitute goalie made five saves and gave up seven goals. Lauren LaBella made seven saves and allowed 14 goals before giving way to Whitney Johnson who allowed three scores.
