
Novice Eight, Men's Pair Claim Victories at Bergen Cup Regatta

Philadelphia - Drexel men's crew landed a pair of wins at the Bergen Cup Regatta as the novice eight and pair outlasted entrants from Philadelphia schools. The Drexel varsity eight and junior varsity eight each took third while the Dragons' varsity four placed fifth. The event was the final appearance for the Dragons before the season culminates at the Dad Vail Regatta starting May 8.
As one of Drexel's newest formed boats, the men's pair opened eyes with its first-place finish on Saturday. Andrew Burns and Peter Schmidt finished with a time of 7:42 to defeat second-place La Salle by eight seconds. The Explorers' boat has been together all season and had favorable finishes throughout the spring. The victorious novice eight boat finished more than eight seconds ahead of La Salle as the Dragons crossed at 6:24.8.
The winner of the Bergen Cup was Temple who turned in a time of 6:05.1. Philadelphia University just edged Drexel for second place with a time of 6:07.5 while Drexel finished 0.3 seconds behind. Saint Joseph's took fourth place at 6:22.4.
Drexel second varsity eight clocked a 6:30.5 to finish behind Saint Joseph's and Temple but ahead of the Hawks' B boat. The varsity four entrant finished ahead of Temple to take fifth place with a time of 7:29.9.
