San Diego, Calif. - After taking fifth in a tough preliminary heat, the Drexel women's varsity eight took first place in the third final at the 2009 San Diego Crew Classic. The Dragons won the third final by nearly seven seconds over the next closest finisher. Drexel's boat crossed ahead of entries from Cal, Santa Clara and Colorado among others.
Drexel found itself with a tough draw as the preliminary heat had the Dragons matched up alongside top boats from Purdue, Saint Joseph's, Temple and St. Mary's. Drexel finished just behind Temple's fourth-place crossing as the Dragons missed out on the petite final. But the Dragons rallied later in the day to dominate the third final and continue the momentum built by the boat's third-place finish at the Murphy Cup Regatta the week before. The Dragons clocked a 7:06.90 in the third final while the Cal lightweight boat crossed at 7.13.83 to take second place.
The Dragons will return to action next weekend as Drexel will compete for the Knecht Cup on the Schuylkill River.
