Hofstra scored four goals in both the third and fourth quarter to pull away from Drexel, 12-7, in a Colonial Athletic Association game in Hempstead, N.Y. The Pride (8-1), ranked fifth in the nation, scored the first two goals of the second half to break a 4-4 tie and remained unbeaten in the CAA at 4-0. The Dragons fell to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in CAA play.
Drexel trailed by just a goal on two occasions in the third quarter. Kyle Bergman made it 7-6 with a man-up goal with four minutes to play in the period. Hofstra answered with less than a minute to play when Jay Card scored at the 45 second mark to give the Pride a two-goal lead. That would be the first of four straight goals for the Pride as they increased the lead to 11-6. Drexel's Greg Casey stopped the run at 6:41, but that would be the last time the Dragons would find the net.
Hofstra's offense started early as Tom Dooley scored just 39 seconds into the game. The Pride would add three more goals before Drexel would get on the scoreboard. Colin Ambler set up freshman Kyle Bergman with 30 seconds left in the period to make it 4-1. Drexel countered in the second quarter and made it a game. Bergman and Kevin Stockel each had man-up goals as the Dragons cut the lead to one goal. Brian Neary tied the game with 5:37 to play in the half and the teams went to intermission tied at 4-4.
Bergman led the Dragons with a career-high four goals. Senior Joe Wojciechowski handed out three and Ambler added a pair. Dooley had four goals for the Pride, while Anthony Muscarella and Card each recorded hat tricks.
Mark Manos picked up 14 saves in a losing cause for the Dragons. Andrew Gvozden had 11 saves for Hofstra. Drexel returns to Philadelphia to take on Villanova on Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field. The game can be seen live on the Comcast Network at 3 p.m.
