Philadelphia - The Drexel men's basketball team begins a two-game home stand on Wednesday night against James Madison at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons (9-10, 4-3 CAA) and Dukes (8-9, 2-5) meet at 7 p.m. in a game that can be seen live on The Comcast Network.
Drexel's CAA record fell to 4-3 after a 71-48 loss at Old Dominion on Saturday night. The Dragons trailed 9-8 early, but the Monarchs went on an 8-0 run to take control of the game. Drexel managed to shoot just 36 percent in the game against the nation's fifth-ranked scoring defense. Chris Fouch was the only Dragon to reach double figures (11 points) but shot just 4-for-15 from the field and made only one of his nine long-range attempts. Evan Neisler added nine points off then bench, while Derrick Thomas chipped in with seven, all after the game was already decided.
Jamie Harris an All-CAA candidate at the point guard spot for the Dragons, leads the team with 14.6 points per game. He was held to just six at ODU. Harris has scored 20 or more points five times. Gerald Colds chips in with 9.8 points per game, but has scored just 12 points in the last two games. Samme Givens is once again among the conference leaders in rebounds. He is averaging 7.9 per contest, fourth best in the CAA.
James Madison has lost three of its last four, with all of those losses coming to teams tied for first in the CAA. On Saturday, the Dukes fell to George Mason in Harrisonburg, 82-71. Julius Wells poured in 21 points to lead James Madison. Denzel Bowles added 15 points, while Pierre Curtis scored 13.
Bowles, a first-year transfer from Texas A&M, has become one of the top big men in the CAA. He leads the Dukes in scoring, rebounding and field-goal percentage. Bowles had 37 points and 15 rebounds in JMU's win against Gardner-Webb. Wells is having another good season for Matt Brady's team. He averages more than 17 points per game, has 54 three-pointers and leads the CAA in three-pointers per game. Darren White, a freshman, chips in with 10.4 points per game. Pierre Curtis is a solid floor leader who leads the team with 76 assists and 23 steals. He also scores just under nine points per game. The Dukes shoot 44 percent from the floor and just under 32 percent from long-range.
Drexel and James Madison are meeting for the 14th time this evening. The Dragons won the first 12 meetings in the series, before the Dukes' win last year in Harrisonburg. Last year, James Madison rallied from a six-point deficit with five minutes to play to defeat Drexel, 66-60. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Dragons. JMU's Juwann James scored on a dunk with 44 seconds remaining to give the Dukes a 59-58 lead. James made it a three-point lead on the next possession after Scott Rodgers short jumper was blocked by a JMU defender. With the Dragons now down by three, Tramayne Hawthorne had a chance to tie it with 20 seconds remaining, but his shot missed and the Dukes got the rebound. They went on to record their first ever victory over the Dragons in 13 meetings.
