Boston - Drexel women's basketball travels to play at Northeastern tonight at 7:00 p.m. in hopes of extending its longest winning streak of the season to five games. The Dragons (12-6, 6-1) are coming off a 55-53 win over VCU at the DAC on Sunday that moved them into a three-way tie for first place in the CAA. The Huskies are 7-11 overall and picked up their second CAA win on Sunday against UNC Wilmington.
All-America candidate Gabriela Marginean try to help her team stave off an upset tonight at a venue where the Dragons have struggled in recent years. Drexel is 1-2 in their last three trips to Solomon Court at Matthews Arena, with their only win coming in overtime 58-53 on Feb. 22, 2009. Marginean won it for Drexel against VCU on Sunday with a 14-foot baseline jumper with 2.8 seconds left to give the Dragons the decisive margin.
Northeastern is 2-5 in CAA play after coming from behind to defeat UNC Wilmington 62-52 on Sunday. The Huskies got off to a slow start and trailed 28-5 in the contest before outscoring the Seahawks 43-23 in the second period. Senior Kendra Walton came off the bench to score 14 points while classmate Kim Carr chipped in 13 in the rally. Brittany Wilson, one of the CAA's top rookies last season, is the team's leader in scoring this season, averaging just over 15 points per game. Northeastern averages a CAA-leading seven three-pointers per game, but they are shooting just .284 from deep and have attempted more than 100 more threes than the next closest team.
Drexel is 20-11 against Northeastern all-time and has won two straight against the Huskies. Northeastern's last win over Drexel was on Jan. 31, 2008 in Boston. Tonight's game is a rematch of the longest game in NCAA Div. I women's basketball history, a 5OT affair won by Drexel 98-90 in Philadelphia on Feb. 22, 2007.
