Philadelphia - Drexel women's basketball will welcome its rival Delaware to the DAC on Sunday for a noon reprisal of the teams' double-overtime classic on Jan. 17 in Wilmington. The Dragons (13-6), who won the first meeting with Delaware (13-6, 5-3) this season, are currently tied for first place in the CAA with a 7-1 conference record. The contest features a match-up of two of the top women's players in the nation, with fellow Wooden Award nominees Gabriela Marginean and Elena Delle Donne squaring off against each other. A record crowd is anticipated for the noon tip, which will be televised live on The Comcast Network.
When the teams met two weeks ago in Newark, Drexel came from behind to win an intense 70-67 game in double overtime. Four Dragons reached double figures in scoring, led by Gabriela Marginean and Jasmina Rosseel with 20 points apiece. Jennifer Stjarnstrom came up with the big bucket of the game with a put-back layup with 23 seconds left in double overtime to put the Dragons on top. Marisa Crane knocked down two free throws with 5.5 seconds on the clock to close out the Drexel victory. Delaware's rookie phenom Elena Delle Donne led all scorers with 27 points.
The Dragons enter Sunday's game riding a five-game winning streak after a victory at Northeastern on Thursday in a high-scoring overtime affair. Gabriela Marginean poured in 41 points, which was the second highest single-game point total in Drexel history, while leading her team to a 91-84 win. Kamile Nacickaite shot the nets off at Solomon Court, connecting with 12-of-16 from the floor while scoring a career-high 27 points. Jasmina Rosseel capped a Drexel rally from 10 down in the final five minutes when she drilled a three from the corner in the final minute. Tyler Hale knocked down two free throws seconds later to give Drexel a lead, but the Huskies would hit a layup with 12 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Rosseel opened the extra period with a three-pointer and the Dragons never looked back en route to their seventh CAA win of the season.
Delaware gave Head Coach Tina Martin her 250th career victory with a comfortable 72-49 win over Towson on Thursday. Delle Donne led four Hens in double-figures with 18 points. But she spend the second half on the bench after injuring her elbow at the end of the first half. Lauren Carra came off the bench to score 14 points and dish out four assists for the Hens, who led by 10 at halftime and ran away with it in the second period.
Drexel will welcome a number of Girl Scout troops from the Southeast PA and South Jersey regions to the DAC on Sunday for Girl Scout Day. The scouts will be selling their delicious wares in the DAC lobby as well as participating in activities with volunteers from Drexel greek life to earn a Drexel merit badge. In addition to watching the game on The Comcast Network, fans can listen to the Dragons go for their 18th straight CAA victory at home on WKDU 91.7 FM, Drexel's student-run radio station, with Pat Delsi and Mike Mazzeo calling the action.
