Game Notes
Philadelphia - The Drexel women's basketball team plays their third consecutive game against a Philadelphia rival when the Saint Joseph's Hawks come to the DAC for a 7:00 p.m. tip tonight. The Dragons (2-0) are red-hot, coming off 31-point wins over La Salle and Penn to start the season. Saint Joseph's (3-0) is also without a loss on the young season and looking to snap a two-game losing skid against the Dragons. Fans who cannot make it out to the game can follow all the action with live audio and streaming video free of charge on Drexel Game Central. Fans can also track the game via the mobile site or by dowloading the free Drexel Sports app for iphones and ipads.
With a resounding 62-31 victory over University City rival Penn last Friday, the Dragons opened their season with two consecutive wins for the first time since 2001-02. The blow-out win also marked the first time since 1986 that Drexel has defeated two opponents in a row by margins of 30 points or more.
Jasmina Rosseel led a balanced scoring effort for the Dragons with 12 points and five assists. In all, 11 Dragons saw action in the game and all of them contributed points to the victory. Hollie Mershon turned in another solid all-around effort with 10 points, four rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block. The Dragons generated 17 turnovers, 14 of them coming on steals, and held the Quakers to just 22 percent shooting from the floor. Penn's 31 points were the second lowest total for a Drexel opponent in the team's Div. I history.
The Hawks come into tonight's game with three wins to open the season for the 10th time in the program's history. Saint Joseph's is led by Michelle Baker, who is one of three returning starters from last year's WNIT team. Baker averages 16.0 points per game and is a member of the Atlantic 10 Honor Roll this week. Fellow junior Kelly Cavallo is averaging just shy of a double-double (10.3 ppg, 9.7 rpg) and was on the Atlantic 10 Honor Roll after the first week of the season. The Hawks have been strong on the boards, averaging better than 43 rebounds per game this season, including 12 offensive rebounds per game in wins over Providence, Sacred Heart and UMBC.
A win tonight would give Drexel its first 3-0 start since 2001-02, when the team went 4-0 to start the season. It would also be the first time that the Dragons defeated three Philadelphia Big 5 teams in the same season.
Pat Delsi and Ari Bluestein will have the call on live audio at www.drexeldragons.com. Fans can buy tickets at the door, at the Drexel Athletics Ticket page or by calling 1-888-4-DREXEL.
