Bethlehem, Pa. – Drexel wrestling fell in it's season opener at No. 17 Lehigh, 45-0. The Dragons traveled to take on their first opponent, the nationally ranked Mountain Hawks but were kept off the board.
At 125 pounds, Lehigh's Mitch Berger won by forfeit sending the Mountain Hawks to an early 6-0 lead. Drexel sent its first wrestler to the mat as Frank Cimato battled Frank Cagnina. Cimato kept Cagnina at bay for the first two periods trailing only 5-2, but was unable to strike in a 16-4 major decision in favor of Cagnina.
Lehigh jumped ahead when, at 141 pounds, Stephen Dutton scored a technical fall over Drexel's Josh Yurasits to give the Mountain Hawks a decisive 15-0 advantage. Austin Sommer gave the Dragons a spark as he took the lead at 149 pounds over Joey Napoli, 2-0 in the first period. Napoli battled back to earn the final 3-2 decision in an overtime period.
At 157 pounds, Charles Aungst was pinned in the first period and eventually fell to Sean Bilodeau sending the Dragons into the intermission trailing 24-0. Drexel's Joe Booth scored another close bout, but it wasn't enough to overcome Brandon Hatchett's final 9-2 victory.
Austin Meys was awarded a fall over Drexel's Justin Wieller in 4:47 at 174 pounds followed by true freshman Jamie Callender's hard fought battle against Hamlin at 184 pounds. Hamlin was able to secure the win with a 12-7 decision for Lehigh.
In the last two matches of the evening, Drexel's Brandon Palik gave the Dragons another push as he wrestled Joe Kennedy to the second closest match of the night in a 3-1 Lehigh decision while Jon Wright Max fell to top-ranked Zach Rey in 5:35 to end the duel.
