Philadelphia – In his final match as a Dragon senior Cory Rohlfsen scored his first career goal. It squared the match for Drexel midway through the first half. Unfortunately the Dragons could not come back after falling behind 3-1, in a 3-2 loss to Old Dominion in their final match of the season. Chris Harmon scored twice for the Monarchs who complete the regular season with a 9-6-2 mark overall and a 5-4-2 record in CAA play. The Dragons finish their 2010 campaign with a 7-10-1 overall record and a 3-8 mark in conference play. Nine Dragons were honored prior to the match as part of Senior Night proceedings.
The Dragons' final match of the season started at a frenetic pace with three quality scoring opportunities in the early minutes of play. Seemingly off the tap, Nate Baker connected with a header on the Monarchs' doorstep only to have his effort thwarted by keeper Evan Newton.
A minute later Anthony Bafile would issue another challenge on Newton's net off a set piece from the left side of the goal box. Bafile ticketed a beautiful curling shot for the upper right corner of the goal, but at the final second Newton dove to his left and made the save with his right hand with his body parallel to the ground.
Old Dominion broke through with a goal in the fifth minute on its first scoring opportunity of the match. Gideon Asante drew a foul just outside the goal box. On the resultant free kick, Drexel's defense blocked an entry blast, but Fredericho Espinach collected the failed clearance and struck a slicing shot to the right corner of the goal to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
Rohlfsen evened the match in the 21st minute after taking on a defender in the box and coming up with a corner kick. Bafiled cued the kick to the middle of the box where Ken Tribbett headed it to the left side of the goal where Rohlfsen knocked it home to square the contest.
Washam responded to Newton's heroics in net with a number of his own exceptional saves. One came on an early blast from 25 yards out off the foot of Jordan LeBlanc. Washam made the initial save then reached up to seize the ball out of mid-air before a charging Asante could knock in the rebound.
Minutes later LeBlanc put a free kick on net, requiring Washam to deflect the ball over the crossbar.
Just under 13 minutes before half Chris Harmon put the Monarchs back on top when he chipped a shot over Washam from 18 yards out off a back pass from LeBlanc. The shot caught Washam backpedaling to make the save and ducked under the crossbar just out of his reach.
Another Drexel corner kick with five minutes left in the half almost found the net. Tribbett again connected with a corner from Bafile, this time directing a powerful header on net that required a save from Newton to maintain ODU's advantage.
The Monarchs added an insurance goal midway through the second half on a penalty kick. Washam was booked for a late challenge when he left his feet in an attempt to break up a run by Yannick Smith in the right side of the goal box. Chris Harmon stepped up to the penalty kick and deposited it into the lower left corner of the net.
A group of substitutions late in the match breathed new life into the Dragons. Andrew Goldberg made things interesting when he halved the Monarchs' advantage with a ferocious blast from 25 yards out on the run. The score, coming with 14 minutes to play, energized the Dragons and cut Old Dominion's lead to 3-2.
Tribbett's head nearly equalized with five minutes to play off a set piece from Bafile from 40 yards out. The rookie midfielder nodded it to the lower left side of the goal, but Newton pounced at the last second to take it from the line.
The Dragons' final chance came with 21 seconds left on a free kick from 50 yards out. Bafile launched it into the box and the ball settled at the foot of Mark Donohue, but Newton smothered it along with the Dragons' chance of sending the match to overtime.
Seniors Thiago Assumpcao, Nate Baker, Anthony Bafile, Max Crockett, Andrew Stolle, Dan Vignola, Justin Johnson, Buzz Conzentino and Cory Rohlfsen where honored on Senior Night in their final match as Dragons. All eight were members of the 2007 CAA regular-season championship team.
