Santa Barbara, Calif. - Memphis' Leigh Rowan came up with a two-out walk-off home run to break a 2-2 tie and give the Tigers a 5-2 win over the Dragons in the nightcap of day two at the UCSB Gaucho Classic. The Dragons' (3-5) loss capped a roller coaster day that saw Drexel win on a walk-off hit in extra innings against Wisconsin before falling to the Tigers (6-3).
The Dragons scored two runs on one hit and took advantage of six walks issued by Tigers' starter Carly Hummel. Rachel Campbell went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Drexel started Ellen Boundy in the contest and the senior worked effectively through three innings, allowing just two runs on three hits and three walks before giving way to Shyann Beach in the fourth.
Beach, who earned her first career win in the Dragons' first game of the day, gave up three runs on six hits, including the game-winning shot with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning, Drexel used some timely baserunning to manufacture a run when Campbell drew a lead-off walk and took second on a balk. Devon Metcalf bunted her to third before Ashley Botelho drew a walk and Paige Collings brought her home with an RBI groundout to make it a 2-1 game.
Campbell was also in the center of run production in the fifth inning. Laura Stagliano reached on an error and took second on a throwing error before Hanna Parrish bunted her to third base. Campbell came to the plate and stroked a double to left field that squared the game at 2-2.
Beach escaped harm in the sixth inning thanks to a double play and a fortuitous line-out to shortstop. Unfortunately she could not escape the bat of Rowan in the bottom of the seventh.
The Dragons will have their chance to exact revenge on Memphis when they close out their run at the UCSB Gaucho Classic against the Tigers at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27.
