Philadelphia – Ashley Botelho showed no signs of rust after a 21-day lay-off from competition, going 5-for-6 with two home runs in a doubleheader split with city rival Temple (7-14). The Dragons (4-6) won game one 2-1 thanks to Botelho's homers and lost 2-0 in the nightcap despite a strong pitching performance by rookie Shyann Beach.
Game One Box
Ashley Botelho belted two home runs to lead Drexel to victory in game one of a Sunday doubleheader at Temple (6-14). Botelho's 20th and 21st career blasts, both solo shots, accounted for both of Drexel's runs in a tightly contested 2-1 victory.
Hillary Allen got the complete-game pitching victory after grinding through seven innings, allowing one run on 10 hits and four strikeouts without walking a batter.
Temple scored on an RBI single by Samantha Schoell with two on in the third inning.
Botelho's first blast squared the game at 1-1 in the fourth and her second shot put Drexel on top in the seven inning. Allen retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to close out the game.
Kristen Morris took the loss for Temple. She let up both runs, six hits and struckout four through seven innings.
Botelho's performance puts her name in Drexel's record books on a few new lines. She is the sixth Dragons ever to hit two home runs in a single game, which is the program's record. In the game she also set a single-game record with nine total bases on two homers and a single. Botelho is already Drexel's career leader in homers and is approaching the all-time RBI mark.
Game Two
Drexel stranded seven runners on base in a 2-0 loss to the Owls in the second game of the Sunday twinbill. Shyann Beach pitched well in her first career start. She allowed just two earned runs on five hits and two walks and struck out four batters in six innings of work.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh Drexel led off the inning with a single by Botelho to center field. Paige Collings followed with a double up the middle to put runners on second and third with no outs. But pinch hitter Katrina Gaudier popped out, Caitlyn Gravenor struck out looking and Caprice DeMirjian ended the game with a liner to second base.
Crystal Nyman earned the complete-game shutout victory after scattering seven hits without a walk and striking out three Dragons.
Drexel opens an eight-game homestand this week with a game against Georgetown Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
