Hempstead, N.Y. - Hofstra (39-10, 17-2) swept Friday's series opening doubleheader with a 12-2 five-inning win in game one and a 2-1 win in the nightcap. In game one, Paige Collings hit her record-setting eighth home run of the season off Hofstra pitching ace Olivia Galati, but the Dragons fell 12-2 to the reglar-season CAA champs in five innings. Collings went 2-for-2 on the day and her first inning blast set a new single-season home run record at Drexel (20-23, 8-12), passing the previous mark held by Ashley Botelho and Sandi Wambold set last season. Amanda Bachmann drove in runs in both games for the Dragons.
Galati got the win for Hofstra to improve to 22-6 on the season. She gave up two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out 11 batters in a complete-game effort.
Allen got the start for Drexel and gave up seven runs in an inning and a third before giving way to Shyann Beach in the second. Beach went two innings and gave up five runs on four hits and a walk. Ellen Boundy worked two thirds of an inning and did not allow an earned run.
Hofstra broke the game open with a six-run second inning capped by a grand slam home run off the bat of Michele DePasquale. The blast put Hofstra on top 7-1
Laura Stagliano drew a walk and stole her CAA-leading 18th base of the season before coming in to score the Dragons' second run of the game on an RBI double by Amanda Bachmann in the fifth inning. Unfortunately the late run was not enough to stave off the eight-run rule and the game ended early.
Game Two
Drexel lost a hotly contested nightcap 2-1 in a game that included a contentious play in the fifth inning.
With Drexel trailing 2-0, Amanda Bachmann blooped an RBI single into right field. She took second on the throw to third. Kelly Downes hit a grounder to shortstop that took a wild bounce over both the shortstop and Bachmann, who was running in front of her on the way to third base. Two runs scored on the play as the ball bounded into the outfield, giving Drexel a 3-2 lead. The two runs were rescinded, however, when the umpires ruled that Bachmann interfered with the play by shielding the sthortstop's view. Bachmann was called out on the play, ending the inning.
Kelly Downes went 2-for-3 at the plate in the loss. Katrina Gaudier pitched well despite taking the loss. She allowed just one earned run on nine hits and struck out four batters in six innings.
Michele Depasquale and Trisha Dreslinski drove in Hofstra's runs and Kris Root went 3-for-4 in the game.
The teams will close out the series with a single game tomorrow.
