Philadelphia - Ashley Klun scored with just 6:13 remaining as Drexel defeated UMBC in the Dragons' season-opener, 1-0. Victoria Troccoli recorded the victory in net in her first career game after taking over goalkeeping duties at halftime and making two saves. Classmate Andi Stampone registered the assist on the game-winning goal in her first career collegiate game.
Stampone collected a loose ball in the right side of the penalty area and sent a centering pass to Klun who was alone in front of the net. Klun smoothly guided the ball past UMBC goalie Lauren Kadet for the game's lone tally. Stampone nearly earned her second assist of the day just minutes later as she sent another centering pass from the right side that Jenna Lindsay was unable to connect on alone in front.
Drexel generated the majority of the game's scoring chances as the Dragons outshot UMBC, 18-9, for the game while Kadet was forced to make 11 saves while Drexel goalies registered just two on the day. Despite the discrepancy, it was nearly the Retrievers who got on the board first as Rachel McKee controlled the ball in front of goal by herself while Drexel goalie Nicole Sinclair charged from her line. McKee chipped the ball past Sinclair but the shot found the crossbar then bounced away from danger.
Early in the second half, the Dragons had an excellent scoring chance as defender Sara Clair dribbled up the right side and found enough open space to fire a shot from 25 yards out that Kadet stopped but was unable to control. The rebound bounced in front of the UMBC keeper but an on-coming Drexel forward was ruled off-side to prevent the second scoring chance. Lindsay peppered the UMBC net with three shots on goal while leading the team with six shots on the day as it appeared the junior would be the one to break the game's scoring drought.
Drexel returns to action on Friday, Aug. 27 as the Dragons face Hartford at Temple's Ambler Field at 2:00 p.m.
