Ambler, Pa. – Drexel women's soccer suffered its first setback of the season as the Dragons were ousted by Hartford, 2-0, in the opening game of Owl Eyes Classic hosted by Temple. The Hawks scored a goal in each half to earn the victory. The loss dropped the Dragons to 1-1-0 on the season.
Drexel had the game's first scoring opportunity when Kim Chiarelli sent a free kick from near midfield into the area where it bounced over the head of the Hartford goalie but no Drexel player was able to get a touch on the ball and it rolled wide of the net. Less than a minute later, Michelle Donnelly sent a pass from the center of the field to Jenna Lindsay who was making a run down the right side. Lindsay dribbled the ball into the area then sent a cross that was just out of the reach of Ashley Klun who was sprinting toward the net.
Despite the early opportunities, it was Hartford who got on the board first as a bouncing ball in the front of the area was mishandled by the Drexel defense. Ariel Aikens picked up the loose ball and directed it into the Drexel net.
Drexel had a chance to even the score with 10 minutes remaining when Andi Stampone sent a centering pass from the left side that Juliana Speroni was able to deflect toward the net with her right foot but the ball went directly to Hartford goalkeeper Lauren Brodeur. With less than five minutes left in the period, Rachel Sheridan sent a ball into the area from 30 yards outside of the net from the right side. The ball found Jess Sarkistan directly in front of the net but her one-timer found the arms of Brodeur.
Drexel nearly went down 2-0 at the half when a broken play on a Drexel corner led to a breakaway on the other end as Alex Uscilla raced in alone on Nicole Sinclair. Uscillia fired a shot that was blocked by the left arm of the charging Sinclair. The ball deflected to the right side of the area where Drexel recovered to prevent another Hartford shot.
Just 16 seconds after the Hawks kicked-off to start the second half, Breeanna Robinson took a pass in the center of the Drexel defensive half and fired a shot from 30 yards out that sailed above the outstretched arms of Victoria Troccoli and into the center of the net. The Dragons' last golden scoring opportunity came with 18 minutes remaining as Sarkisian picked up a loose ball on the right side of the area and fired a shot past Brodeur but the ball sailed just left of the net.
Drexel will conclude play in the Owl Eyes Classic on Sunday as the Dragons face Niagara at 11:00 a.m.
