Durham, N.C. - No. 13 Drexel dropped a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to No. 10 Duke in a much-anticipated match-up of national powers. Each team scored in the first half while the Blue Devils were able to record the game-winner just less than eight minutes into the extra session. The loss dropped Drexel to 2-2 on the season with both losses coming to teams ranked in the top 10. Duke improved to 4-2 on the season.
In the 28th minute, Emmie Le Marchand broke a scoreless tie as she fired a shot from about four yards out that beat Drexel goalie Jenna Phillips. The Dragons bounced back just four minutes later as Kim Tunell rifled a shot off a penalty corner that was saved by goalie Samantha Nelson. Christina Mastropaolo pounced on the loose ball on the rebound after inserting the penalty corner and sent the ball to the back of the cage.
The second half saw scoring opportunities for both teams but it was Phillips who kept the Dragons in the game. With no time remaining, Duke was awarded a penalty corner. The Blue Devils' Brenna Rescigno fired a shot that was saved by Phillips just before Duke was awarded yet another penalty corner. The result was the same on the next Duke attempt as Phillips saved the ball and the Dragons were able to successfully clear the ball to set up overtime.
In the extra session, the Blue Devils continued putting pressure on the Drexel defense. Once again, Phillips was up to the task as she turned away a Chelsea Amsley shot just over four minutes in before stopping a Susan Ferger shot a minute later. Le Marchand was finally able to beat Phillips as she ripped a shot that found the left side of the cage.
Duke outshot Drexel, 17-11, though Phillips made 11 saves to Nelson's four. The Blue Devils held a slim 7-6 edge on penalty corners as Duke avenged a 4-3 overtime loss that the Dragons dealt them last season at Buckley Field.
