Box Score
Philadelphia - Christina Mastropaolo established a new program record with five goals in a game while breaking the career Division I program record for goals with 53 while teammate Susan Ciufo tied her own record with three assists as Drexel defeated Hofstra, 5-2, in the teams' conference opener. The Dragons broke open a 2-2 game after halftime to move to 5-3 on the season while Hofstra dipped to 5-4.
With less than 16 minutes remaining, the teams remained deadlocked until Mastropaolo scored on a rebound in front to finally breakthrough the Pride defense in the second half. Five minutes later, Mastropaolo tied the single-game mark with a score as Ciufo deflected a ball in front to her teammate standing alone at the post. Five more minutes later, it was nearly the exact same play as Mastropaolo once again found herself with the ball and an empty cage at the left post.
The Dragons had most of the first half's offensive opportunities but the game was tied at the break. Drexel opened the scoring when Ciufo dribbled from the top of the circle to in front of the cage when she slid the ball to the left post where Mastropaolo slammed it into the cage. Hofstra answered on its lone penalty corner of the half when Williams slipped a ball between the legs of Jenna Phillips directly after the stick stop. The Dragons nearly regained the lead as Ciufo received a pinpoint pass from Amanda Fleischut and dribbled in alone on Amanda Heyde. The Hofstra goalie charged but Ciufo dribbled around her but Heyde fouled her as she went by and the referee signaled for a penalty stroke. Ciufo stepped up to take the stroke but her shot clipped the post and bounced out. Just seconds later, Kim Tunell sent a ball in from the left midfield area that found the stick of Mastropaolo and the top of the circle. The senior ripped a shot that shook the upper middle section of the net to give Drexel a 2-1 lead. With less than four minutes remaining, the referee awarded Hofstra a penalty stroke that Williams drove into the right side of the cage to tie the game.
For the game, Drexel outshot Hofstra, 29-6, and earned nine of the game's 12 penalty corners. Phillips stopped one shot while Heyde made 14 saves, including several sprawling saves in the second half.
For its next game, Drexel will head to nearby Villanova for a non-conference tilt on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m.
