Villanova, Pa. - Senior Christina Mastropaolo broke a 1-1 tie in the second half with a goal that gave the Dragons their 13th straight victory over a Philadelphia-area school with a 2-1 triumph over Villanova. The win moved No. 18 Drexel to 6-3 on the season while the Wildcats fell to 2-6.
The Wildcats opened the game's scoring as Meredith Sabatini deflected an Ally Smith shot 15:35 into the game. Less than three minutes later, Susan Ciufo knotted the score with an unassisted goal at 18:01. Neither team was unable to score during the final 17 minutes of the half. Drexel outshot Villanova, 10-8, for the period though the Wildcats held a 5-2 edge on penalty corners.
It took less than seven minutes for the Dragons to break the tie in the second half. Mastropaolo scored on a Kim Tunell assist. The Drexel defense made the one-goal lead stand up as the Wildcats managed just one shot on goal for the entire second half and goalie Jenna Phillips turned it away. Drexel also did not allow a penalty corner to Villanova while registering three of its own. Drexel outshot Villanova in the decisive second half, 9-2. Megan Goelz made nine saves for Villanova while Phillips stopped five shots for Drexel.
Drexel returns to Colonial Athletic Association action on Friday, Oct. 1 as the Dragons travel to Virginia Commonwealth to take on the Rams.
