
Susan Ciufo scored twice in Drexel's 3-1 victory over VCU
Seniors' First Half and Phillips' Second Half Lead Dragons Past VCU, 3-1

Richmond, Va. - Drexel scored three first-half goals, all from seniors, and withstood a relentless VCU attack in the second half to upend the Rams, 3-1. Susan Ciufo scored a pair of goals while Christina Mastropaolo notched the game-winner. Jenna Phillips made six second-half saves as Drexel was outshot 11-0 in the final period but held on to improve to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Less than nine minutes into the game, Mastropaolo scored unassisted to give Drexel an early lead. Ciufo followed with goals at 23:54 and 27:44 to give the Dragons what looked to be a comfortable 3-0 first-half lead. Fellow senior Kim Tunell was credited with an assist on Ciufo's first goal. The first half ended with Drexel holding a 10-1 edge on shots and a 6-2 advantage on penalty corners.
The second half saw the Rams' offense come alive though they were unable to produce more than a single goal. Phillips' six saves was instrumental in keeping Drexel's lead at least two goals for the rest of the game. The Rams finally broke through with less than nine minutes remaining as Marle van Dessel scored her fifth goal of the season but it was too late as Drexel held on for the victory.
For its next game, Drexel will face James Madison in a key conference game on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1:00 p.m.
