The Drexel women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision in double overtime at UNC Wilmington on Sunday. The Seahawks scored the only goal of the match with just 1:20 remaining in the second extra period.
The Seahawks improved to 2-0 in league play and evened their season mark at 5-5 with their second straight one-goal victory. The Dragons slipped to 0-2 in conference play and 4-6 overall.
UNCW sophomore Lindsay Henry's game-winning tally came on a free kick from roughly 30 yards out that went into the lower left-hand corner of the net.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the first half. UNCW junior Kelly Dodd got behind the Drexel defense in the 16th minute and went in 1-on-1 against Victoria Troccoli before sending a shot past the outside of the left post. Later in the frame, Dragons defender Katie Duncan hit a free kick from near midfield that UNCW keeper Caitlin Hunter was able to deflect off the crossbar.
The Seahawks had the best opportunity of the second half as junior Meagan Simeone fired a shot from just outside the box in the 78th minute that Troccoli made the initial save on before stopping senior Megan Novak's rebound attempt from point-blank range. Victoria Troccoli recorded eight saves for the Dragons in the losing effort. Caitlin Hunter recorded her second straight shutout for UNCW.
Drexel returns home to face Hofstra on Thursday afternoon.
