
Nacickaite's Buzzer-Beating Three-Pointer Wins it For Drexel at William & Mary

Williamsburg, Va. – Kamile Nacickaite drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Drexel a thrilling 59-58 at William & Mary. The Dragons (11-5, 3-2) rallied from a late four-point deficit to pick up their first conference road win of the season. Nacickaite put together her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds and was 2-for-2 from deep. Jasmina Rosseel added 11 points, including an important late three-pointer of her own, and a team-high four assists. Taysha Pye led the Tribe (1-14, 0-5) with 19 points and four assists.
The exciting conclusion was an appropriate ending to a game that was as close for the duration of the game as the final score indicated. The Dragons shot 47.7 percent from the floor and a season-best 7-for-10 from deep, while the Tribe made 46.5 percent from the floor and 3-for-8 from long range. Drexel outworked William & Mary on the boards 31-22, led by Nacickaite's 10 boards and six from Tyler Hale, who returned to the court for the first time in three games.
Redshirt freshman Ashley Davis provided a spark off the bench for Drexel by putting in six points in a matter of eight minutes midway through the second half. .
Emily Correal (11) and Taylor Hilton (10) also reached double-figure scoring for the Tribe. Correal was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line, including two important shots in the final minute that gave her team a four-point lead.
The Dragons got off to a slow start offensively in the opening minutes of the second half and William & Mary capitalized to take the lead for the first time, 35-34, at the 13:45 mark.
Minutes later Katherine DeHenzel would drill a three-pointer to put the Tribe on top by seven, 45-38, at the midway point in the half.
A pair of offensive rebound put-backs by Taylor Hilton in the post kept William & Mary ahead by that margin for the next two minutes, while the Dragons faltered on offense.
Davis gave the Dragons the spark they needed with her team trailing 49-42 and under nine to play. The redshirt freshman drove the lane and got her defender in the air before finishing on the right side. She knocked down the resultant free throw to cut the Tribe's lead to four points with 8:44 to play.
Less than a minute later, Davis would spot up in the corner on a fast break and knock down an open three to make it a one-point game with just under eight minutes to play. Ayana Lee's layup at the 6:18 mark put the Dragons back on top 50-49
On the defensive end, Rosseel would slyly poach passes over the next two minutes to keep the Tribe at bay and allow the Dragons to hold on to their lead until the final three minutes.
Pye converted four straight from the line and hit a baseline jumper to take back the lead for the Tribe, 55-53 at the 2:19 mark.
The Dragons had a chance to tie at with 1:50 to play but a jumper and put-back attempt by Nacickaite would not fall. The Tribe's Correal then converted two free throws to push its advantage to 57-53 with 51 seconds left.
On Drexel's next trip down the court a pick and roll between Nacickaite and Rosseel found the elder guard wide open on the wing for a three pointer and she did not miss.
Rosseel's trey brought the game to 57-56 with 31 seconds left. Pye brought the ball down court for the Tribe matched up against Renee Johnson-Allen. As she crossed over to her left, Johnson-Allen was quickly whistled for a reaching foul, the team's 10th, which put Pye on the line for two. She made the first and missed the second, giving the Drexel the ball trailing 58-56.
Nacickaite missed a jumper in the lane with 13 seconds left but the tie up for the rebound gave Drexel the ball underneath the basket. Another drive by Nacickaite resulted in a lose ball and another Drexel possession with six seconds left.
The in-bounds pass came to Nacickaite on the wing. In the triple-threat stance she shot a jab step at her defender took a few dribbles then pulled up for a three-pointer that splashed the net as time expired to give Drexel the win.
Drexel used full-court pressure from the tip to turn up the intensity of the game and force the Tribe into running transition offense for the majority of the first half. The Dragons' press generated five turnovers and allowed the team to mount a lead as large as 10 points in the period. Tenacious play by the Tribe forced 12 Drexel miscues and allowed William & Mary to come back twice in the period and enter halftime trailing but two 27-25.
Nacickaite, who led the team with 11 points at halftime, gave the Dragons a 20-10 margin with seven minutes to play when she hit a driving layup in the lane.
The Tribe came close to erasing that lead with an 8-0 run capped by two free throws by Emily Correal that made it a 20-18 game.
Mershon and Nacickaite offered the rebuttal for Drexel by reeling off five straight points. Mershon knocked down a three-pointer in transition and Nacickaite wrestled away a steal in the post and converted it with a driving layup on the other side to restore a comfortable 25-18 Drexel lead.
But this advantage would also be short-lived, as the Tribe scored seven straight points and tied the game at 25 apiece on a fade-away jumper by Pye with 33 seconds in the half. Nacickaite gave Drexel its final two-point margin on a finger-roll layup before the last ticks of the clock.
Drexel's victory was its first on the road in conference play this season and the first time the Dragons have won at William & Mary since the 2007-08 season. The Dragons had lost 3-of-4 in Willamsburg coming into the game.
The Dragons are back on the road next Thursday when they visit George Mason for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
