Philadelphia – Drexel picked up four out of 10 bouts but could not escape nationally ranked American with the win. The Dragons, 6-12, used four straight wins to gain momentum early on the 11-4 No. 9 Eagles leading them through three matches into the heart of the dual. Three pins and one major decision for American proved to be too much to overcome for the Dragons as Drexel was defeated in the final five match-ups.
American struck first, and very early when No. 1 Steve Fittery recorded pin over Drexel's Charles Aungst in just 0:57. Picking themselves up, the Dragons responded with four straight victories led by sophomore Joe Booth's sudden victory take down of American's Patrick Graham at 165 pounds. Senior Justin Wieller used the energy swing to dominate a 9-1 major decision over Tanner Shaffer which included two take downs, one escape, near fall points and riding time.
Continuing the success was Drexel's Shawn Fausey at 184 pounds. Fausey pushed the Dragons even further on top with a 4-2 decision over Thomas Barreiro setting the score at 10-6. Brandon Palik earned six more team points for Drexel with a win by forfeit as the Dragons widened the gap.
American's Daniel Mitchell moved up from 197 to heavy weight where he pinned sophomore Jack Callender in 1:55 to begin the Eagles comeback. 125 pounds saw Michael Gomez put up a good fight to keep Drexel on top but Thomas Williams earned American's second straight fall in 4:40 swinging the team score in favor of the Eagles 18-16.
American defeated Drexel in the next three matches to close out the dual. Kevin Tao earned a 7-1 decision over Drexel's Frank Cimato ata 133 pounds while No. 14 Matt Mariacher put the Eagles out of reach with a 12-2 major decision over Garth Mahosky at 141 pounds. In the final bout, Austin Sommer earned eight points but was out done by No. 12 Ganbayar Sanjaa who picked up the ultimate 15-8 decision.
Drexel will be back in action at the DAC on Sunday, Jan. 30 when it takes on conference foe Hofstra. Match time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
