Joe Booth Defeats No. 10 P.J. Gillespie in Drexel's 23-15 Loss to Hofstra

Philadelphia – Sophomore Joe Booth, 165 pounds, defeated No. 10 P.J. Gillespie of Hofstra with a sudden victory take down in the seventh overtime period. The Dragons were unable to earn the ultimate victory as the Pride won five out of nine bouts including two back-to-back pins to open the match.
Hofstra's Lou Ruggirello, ranked No. 6 on Intermat, used a pin in 2:17 over Drexel's Frank Cimato to open the match at 133 pounds. At 141 pounds, Vince Varaela recorded Hofstra's second straight win by fall this time over Josh Yurasits in 1:41.
Drexel picked up its first team points at 149 pounds as freshman Austin Sommer edged Matt Spataro in an 8-7 decision setting the score at 12-3 in favor of Hofstra. The Pride answered right back with a 5-1 decision from Tyler Banks over Drexel's John McDermott at 157 pounds.
In the next bout, with a thrilling ending, Booth took down fellow New Yorker and No. 10 at 165 pounds, P.J. Gillespie. Booth and Gillespie went back and forth through seven overtime periods before Booth earned the sudden victory with a final score of 5-3.Wtih the win, Drexel closed the gap at 15-6, but two consecutive wins for Hofstra derailed the Dragons rally.
At 175 pounds, Justin Wieller was trumped by Hofstra's Ryan Patrovich, ranked 16 on Intermat, with a 13-0 major decision. In the next match up, at 184 pounds, Ben Clymer recorded Hofstra's fourth bonus points win with a 9-0 major decision over Drexel's Shawn Fausey.
The Dragons continued to battle back as red shirt freshman Brandon Palik picked up his 15th win of the season and team-leading fifth win by fall when he pinned Hofstra's Matt Loew at 197 pounds in 3:27. Sophomore Jack Callender earned an 8-2 decision over Tim Murphy at heavy weight in the match's final bout as there was a double forfeit at 125 pounds. With the 23-15 win the Pride move to 9-3-1 on the season as Drexel slips to 6-13.
Drexel will be back in action Friday, Feb. 4 as it hosts Boston at 7:00 p.m. and Brown on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 12:00 p.m.
