Philadelphia – Wrestling opens up a four game home stand beginning Friday, Jan. 21 as the Dragons host the nationally ranked American University Eagles in the opening event of Homecoming weekend at Drexel. Drexel, 6-11, is looking to finish the year off strong in the friendly confines of the DAC against an American team that has compiled a 9-4 record so far this season.
The Dragons are coming off two tough matches at the CAA Duals. In its first match up against Old Dominion, Drexel was barely edged in a 22-18 loss to the Monarchs despite winning six of ten individual bouts. Three pins and a forfeit were enough to help ODU survive the comeback. Drexel also fell to Binghamton 22-12. Joe Booth, 165 pounds, and Justin Wieller, 174 pounds, both picked up two wins on the day including Booth's 8-5 decision over Intermat's No. 19 Justin Lister of Binghamton.
No. 9 American travels to Philadelphia after a successful weekend at the Lone Star Duals in Dallas, Texas that saw the Eagles go 3-1. Steve Fittery, No. 1 at 157 pounds, and Ganbayar Sanjaa, No. 12 at 141 pounds, both went a perfect 3-0 on the day picking up three technical falls, a sudden victory and two decisions together.
In their last meeting, American defeated Drexel 40-6 in Washington, D.C. The Dragons were only able to pick up two individual bouts with their two victory leaders, Steve Mytych and Kyle Frey, temporarily sidelined.
Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. It is homecoming weekend at Drexel and all alumni, family and friends are encouraged to come out and catch some of the action.
