Philadelphia - In a rematch of a frustrating overtime loss in Harrisonburg, Va. two weeks ago, Drexel hosts the James Madison Dukes in a 7:00 p.m. game tonight at the DAC. James Madison (13-6, 6-1) is one of three teams perched atop the CAA standings after the first month of conference play. The Dragons (12-6, 4-3) are going after a split of the season series tonight and could tie the program's all-time record for consecutive victories at home with their ninth straight win at the DAC.
The Dragons are coming off a resounding 69-57 win over Hofstra on Sunday in which the team trounced the Pride on the boards 55-25 led by a 11-point, 15-rebound double-double by Tyler Hale. Drexel's performance on the glass resulted in its highest rebound total since February of 2002. Jasmina Rosseel provided the offense for the team with a career-high 26 points, all of them coming in the second half. The Pride was able to hang in the game until midway through the second half, thanks largely to 25 trips to the free-throw line and 21 Drexel turnovers. Rosseel drilled a pair of three-pointers in the waning minutes to give the Dragons a comfortable lead, and salted away the victory with four free throws in the last minute.
Drexel is currently tied with Delaware for fifth place in the conference. James Madison, Old Dominion and UNC Wilmington are on equal footing atop the standings with matching 6-1 records, while VCU is alone in fourth place with a 5-2 mark. The Dragons travel to play the Rams this weekend before facing longtime rivals Towson and Delaware next week.
James Madison won a pair of home games last week, 72-59, over William & Mary and a 69-59 win over VCU on Sunday. With the wins, JMU has won four straight, seven in a row at home and eight of its last night contests. The Dukes were led by Lauren Jimenez as she returned after missing three games due to a concussion. Jimenez poured in 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and recorded her fifth double-double of the season against William & Mary. The nation's leading scorer, Dawn Evans, enters tonight's game averaging better than 26 points per game and she is just two assists shy of 500 for her career. Evans poured in 27 points against the Dragons in the team's first meeting of the season on Jan. 13.
Drexel fell 77-73 in overtime against the Dukes in the teams' previous meeting this season. Kamile Nacickaite matched Evans' 27-point performance with a career-high 27 points of her own. But James Madison's rebounding proved to be the deciding factor in the game. Jalissa Taylor put together a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double and used two put-back layups in the final minutes of play to give her team the winning edge.
