Philadelphia - Zeynep Mafa and Elise Leizerovich led a solid Drexel effort with wins at third and fourth singles, but the Dragons could not close out George Washington in a 5-2 dual match loss at the Drexel Armory. In an evenly contested match the teams played a number of close matches. Drexel lost both of its doubles matches 8-6 and Emma Brook fell in a tough three-setter at second singles.
Leizerovich played her way back after losing the first set 6-1 against Leah Pascarella to win the second sit in a tiebreaker and then close out the superset third set 10-6 to give the Dragons a second team point and pick up her first singles win of the spring season.
In one of the top singles performances of the day, Zeynep Mafa came back from a 5-4 deficit in the second set after dominating 6-2 in the first. Mafa appeared to be in control early in the second set, using a well-place running forehand and a winner from the baseline to take a 1-0 lead against Mimi Hamling. But Hamling, who was an all-conference performer for the Colonials last season, battled back with a break of serve to pull ahead. Mafa won the last two games before finishing off Hamling 7-4 in the set tiebreaker. The thrilling victory gave the Dragons their first point of the match.
The Dragons are back on the courts on Feb. 12 they travel to play tdual matches against Navy and DePaul in Annapolis, Md.
